How mayoral elections work
The inaugural Combined Authority Mayoral election took place on Thursday 1 May 2025. Voters chose from 6 declared candidates, with the winner of the election, Luke Campbell, being the candidate who received the greatest number of votes. The election was conducted via a first past the post system, which is the same way that winners are determined during General and Local elections.
The Combined Authority Mayoral election takes place every four years, meaning the next election is expected to occur in May 2029.
When the winner was announced
The result of the inaugural Combined Authority Mayoral election was announced following the counting of votes at East Riding Leisure Haltemprice in Anlaby and Hull Guildhall on Friday 2 May 2025.
The result within each of the local authorities was first announced locally -
- the Hull City Council area result was announced at the Guildhall in Hull
- the East Riding of Yorkshire Council area result was announced at East Riding Leisure Haltemprice in Anlaby
The overall result was then announced at East Riding Leisure Haltemprice in Anlaby by the Combined Authority Returning Officer Alan Menzies.
When the winner of the election officially became mayor
The first Hull and East Yorkshire mayor, Luke Campbell, officially started in office on Tuesday 6 May 2025, where he signed the Mayoral Declaration of Acceptance of Office.
The first mayor-chaired meeting of the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority is due to take place on Wednesday 28 May.
