Role of the Mayor

The Mayor's role is to -

• Provide overall vision and leadership.
• Seek the best value for taxpayers’ money.
• Directly accountable to the area’s electorate.

The Mayor is directly elected by the people of Hull and East Yorkshire, and is the Chair of Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority.

He works alongside local leaders to create a long-term vision and securing more investment into the region.

What the Mayor does -

• Set the region’s big-picture strategy by guiding the Combined Authority agenda on transport, skills, jobs, housing and investment.
• Secure funding from the government and businesses by bringing partners together to deliver projects that benefit our region.
• Work with Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and regional partners. The Combined Authority does not replace any existing organisation.
• Champion and represent it on a national level by engaging with the government and national agencies.

What the Mayor does not do -

• Run public services such as bins, housing repairs, planning applications, schools or social care. The responsibility for these remains with the two local councils.
• Control the NHS, police or benefits. These sit with national bodies and local services.
• Handle casework like an MP or a councillor. The Mayor does not replace or duplicate their roles.
