Mayor welcomes approval of strategy to boost jobs, health and earnings.

The Mayor has welcomed the formal approval of the first edition of the Get Hull and East Yorkshire Working plan.

The flagship employment and health strategy sets out a bold framework to tackle economic inactivity, improve earnings, and integrate health and work services.

Its approval by the Department for Work and Pensions is another milestone for Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority, and follows a strong letter of support from NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB).

In the letter, the ICB recognised the plan’s potential to transform health and employment across the region by aiming to improve outcomes for individuals, employers and organisations.

Luke Campbell MBE, Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, said:

“This is great news for Hull and East Yorkshire. The plan is all about making it easier for people to find good jobs and stay in work, while getting the right support for their health.

“We’ve worked closely with our local partners to make sure the plan can work and is focused on what really matters to people here. It’s a big step forward for our region, and I’m excited to see the difference it will make.”

Paula Varley, Regional Director (Yorkshire and Lincolnshire) for the Department of Work and Pensions, said:

“The Department for Work and Pensions is proud to support the Get Hull and East Yorkshire Working Plan. This is a locally led strategy to tackle economic inactivity and improve employment outcomes across the region.

“We at DWP are fully committed to partnership working and Jobcentre Plus plays an important role in Hull and East Yorkshire’s employment landscape, both as a provider of frontline support and as a strategic partner.

“We look forward to building together a more integrated and responsive system which puts people first.”

Jason Stamp, Chair of NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said:

"We are very proud to support the Get Hull and East Yorkshire Working Plan as a key strategic partner.

"This ambitious 10-year Get Hull and East Yorkshire Working Plan recognises the intrinsic link between health and employment – good health supports good work and vice versa.

"By working together across sectors, we can help more people in our region to enter, remain, and progress in secure, high-quality employment. Through collaboration and a shared commitment to addressing local priorities, we aim to create healthier, more prosperous communities and businesses across Hull and East Yorkshire."

Developed in collaboration with local and regional partners, the plan has identified local challenges and practical responses – aimed at delivering a single, streamlined system that helps residents access meaningful work and stay employed for longer.

The Combined Authority will now move forward with its 12-month programme of action, which includes the establishment of common referral standards and the publication of a shared data dashboard.

A second edition of the plan will be published in April 2026 to embed final strategies and a funding framework.
