Statement from Luke Campbell MBE, Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, on bus service reliability in the region:
Over the past few weeks, residents in Hull and East Yorkshire have been sharing their experiences of EYMS bus services with me. People are becoming increasingly frustrated, and it’s not hard to see why.
There’s been a clear rise in reports of buses being cancelled, real time information being wrong and regular problems on several routes. The issues are happening too often, and it’s making daily life difficult for people who rely on our bus network.
When a bus doesn’t turn up or the information isn’t accurate, it’s passengers who pay the price. People arrive late for work or school, miss their hospital appointment, and can’t reach friends and family.
They deserve a service they can trust.
We know there are challenges, including vehicle availability, driver shortages and recent bad weather. These are real issues, but they can’t be the explanation every time something goes wrong.
People expect bus operators to be open with them about what’s going wrong and what’s being done to fix it. They need honest, accurate information when services are disrupted.
Interim leadership arrangements are being put in place at EYMS, and my office is already engaging to agree on the next steps. My priority is to keep things moving so people can see a real difference.
My team’s already engaging with residents, community groups and operators to identify where investment can make the biggest difference. I want local voices to help shape the future of our network.
I encourage anyone who wants to raise their concerns to contact my office by emailing mayor@hullandeastyorkshire.gov.uk.
